A state cell phone recycling law going into effect tomorrow forbids owners from tossing their old cellular phones in the trash. The new law also requires retailers to collect used cell phones at no charge for recycling.

ABI Research of the US said shipments and sales of recycled mobile phones are expected to exceed 100 million units and US$3 billion, respectively, in 2012. Many current estimates regarding the number of recycled phones being resold place today’s number somewhere between 5 and 10 million. However, with more than 250 million cell phone users currently in the U.S. and an increased focus on resource conservation, 100 million recycled phones being resold in 2012 may be a realistic expectation.

According to a recent AP article, this year will mark the first calendar year U.S. households will spend more dollars on cell phones than land lines according to industry and government officials. Telecom industry analysts and officials are certain 2007 cell phone dollars will beat land line dollars. The 2006 average cell phone bill was $524 compared to $542 on land lines and pay phones according to government data.

In preparation for the 700 MHz auction to begin on January 24th, the FCC released the names of the applicants. It was interesting to see that the list, 266 in total, was split between companies whose applications were accepted (96) and those whose applications were deemed as incomplete (170).
